Speaking of Artists Going Slow... 12.4.13

At the Metropolitan Museum Of Art I saw this painting for the first time, The Triumph of Aemilus Paulus, by Carle Vernet (French, 1789). It's about ten feet long. Look at the close up detail. I bet Vernet didn't do quick party sketches at bar Mizpahs. The amount of attention to each tiny figure is incredible. Wiki says his sister was killed in the French revolution and he gave up painting. I could weep.
